Mr. Whitlock

asked the Secretary of State for Trade why he has not reimposed the tariff on imports of knitted outerwear and knitted underwear as permitted under the Community indicative ceilings agreement with Portugal, since the ceiling for outerwear imports was reached in August and the ceiling for underwear imports has also now been exceeded.

Mr. Deakins

The question of reimposing duties on knitted outerwear of Tariff Heading No. 6005 is under urgent consideration but presents a number expressed in tons and as a percentage of home consumption, giving best estimates for 1975.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what has been the United Kingdom consumption of paper and board over the past five years; what amount was United Kingdom produced; what amount was imported; and what are the similar estimates for 1975.

Production, imports and implied consumption of paper and board in the United Kingdom in the past five years and in the first half of 1975 were as follows:

of difficulties. Imports into the Community of knitted underwear of Tariff Heading No. 6004 have not yet reached the level of the indicative ceiling. Before duties can be reimposed under the procedures of Protocol 1 of the Portuguese/EEC Free Trade Agreement a regulation by the EEC Commission and an order under the Import Duties Act must be made.
