HC Deb 11 November 1975 vol 899 cc636-8W
Mr. Evelyn King

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many administrators without medical qualifications within the health and hospital services or employed in her Department in connection with those services draw salaries in excess of £5,000, £7,000 and £10,000, respectively; and what is the total of persons so employed.

Mr. Meacher

, pursuant to his reply [Official Report, 10th November 1975], gave the following information:

NHS Staff.—I regret that records are not maintained centrally of the current pay drawn by NHS staff. However, from the number of administrative posts which the Department authorised regional and area health authorities in England to establish and fill within their management scheme quotas for the period up to March 1976, the numbers of staff whose current basic salary, at the scale mean, would be in excess of £5,000, £7,000 and £10,000 respectively are likely to be of the order of:

Over £10,000 250
Over £7,000 but not exceeding £10,000 1,000
Over £5,000 but not exceeding £7,000 2,000

At 30th September 1974 the total number of NHS administrative staff was 12,204.

Department of Health and Social Security

Because of the integrated nature of some areas of the Department's work it is not possible to quote precise figures, but approximate numbers of staff at present in the Department's health administrative divisions drawing salaries at these levels on the same basis are:

Over £10,000 70
Over £7,000 but not exceeding £10,000 200
Over £5,000 but not exceeding £7,000 180

The total number of executive and administrative staff working in these areas is 1,267.

NOTES—i. All medical, nursing and other professional staff employed wholly or partly on administrative duties, secretarial and clerical staff and, in the case of the NHS, specialised grades within the administrative and clerical group such as catering managers, are excluded.

ii. Pension rights for departmental staff, unlike those for NHS staff, are non-contributory.
