The estimated total cost of cars with allocated drivers used by the Civil Service in London in the financial year 1974–75 was £486,700. Some of the cars are used for other purposes, such as movement of urgent papers, as well as for passenger carrying, and the drivers of some cars may be employed on other duties in addition to driving. The figure above does not include the cost of chauffeur-driven hire cars which may be used on an intermittent and irregular basis as needed.
