HC Deb 11 November 1975 vol 899 cc640-1W
Mr. Grist

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list for each of the last three years the number of civil servants in his Department who have been prematurely retired on grounds of (i) inefficiency, (ii) limited efficiency, (iii) redundancy and (iv) discipline, showing executive and administrative grades separately.

Mr. Rowlands

In the Diplomatic Service, no distinction is made between administrative and executive grades at and above grade 5.—Principal—level.

In regard to the particular categories mentioned by the hon. Member, the details requested for unified grades—grades 1–5, administrative grades—grades 7A and 8—and executive grades—grades 6, 7E and 9—for the last three years, ending 31st October in each case, are as follows:

1973
Unified Grades Administrative Grades Executive Grades
Inefficiency
Limited efficiency 9
Redundancy
Discipline
1974
Unified Grades Administrative Grades Executive Grades
Inefficiency
Limited efficiency 2
Redundancy 1
Discipline
1975
Unified Grades Administrative Grades Executive Grades
Inefficiency
Limited efficiency 1
Redundancy 1
Discipline

The Diplomatic Service as a whole is nearly 13 per cent. smaller now than the Foreign and Commonwealth Services were before their merger in 1965.
