HC Deb 10 November 1975 vol 899 cc493-4W
Dr. Hampson

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many of the 30,000 vacant places in science and technology, referred to in his reply to the hon. Member for Isle of Ely (Mr. Freud) on 17th July 1975, are in polytechnics and other non-university colleges and how many are in the universities; and how these compare in each sector with the number of places in science and technology which are filled.

Mr. Mulley

About 18,000 of the 30,000 empty science and technology places are in universities; the remainder are in polytechnics. In 1973–74, the latest year for which information is available, about 95,000 science and technology places were occupied in universities and about 37,000 in polytechnics.
