asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many registered milk producers, and how many cows in dairy herds, left milk production under the milk-to-beef conversion scheme pursuant to applications received by his Department (a) between 1st September and 31st December 1974, and (b) after 31st December 1974.

Between 1st September and 31st December 1974, the closing date for applications, my Department received applications from 2,842 registered milk producers who on 4th June kept 105,895 dairy cows. The available records relate to the date when an application was approved and not when it was received. The number of applications approved between 1st September and 31st December 1974 was 1,014 and the number of cows kept on 4th June 1973 by the producers concerned was 39,859.

United Kingdom from EEC and non-EEC sources, is given below. The prices represent average unit values for September 1975. Values were recorded in sterling terms at the rate of exchange approprate at the time of lodgement of the Customs entry.

No applications have been accepted during 1975 but 2,760 have been approved involving 109,712 dairy cows.
