HL Deb 05 November 1975 vol 365 cc1369-70WA
Lord CHELWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will give facts and figures comparing the noise of Concorde on take-off and landing with Boeing 707s, DC8s and VCl0s, what conclusions they have reached, and why the Department of Trade did not publish this information at the same time as the figures were given for the recent Concorde tests.

Lord WINTERBOTTOM

My Lords, measured in effective perceived noise decibels (EPNdB) under properly controlled test conditions in accordance with the criteria set out in Annex 16 to the Chicago Convention, the noise made by Concorde, the Boeing 707, the DC8 and the VC10 is as follows: &—

Take-off Landing
Concorde 119.5 116.7
Boeing 707–320C 114.0 120.0
DC8–61 115.0 116.0
VC10 110.0 112.0

The noise readings made during Concorde's endurance trials at Heathrow this summer were not, of course, made under such controlled conditions and measured the peak noise reached over specified monitoring points in perceived noise decibels (PNdB), which do not take account of the duration or the tone of noise.

A copy of the report of the Casablanca trials has been placed in the Library and the main conclusions were given by the Secretary of State for Industry in another place on 28th October, as soon as the report was available.
