§ Mr. Denis Howell4,706 smoke control orders have been made since the222W introduction of the Clean Air Act 1956. These have played a major part in reducing air pollution in England and Wales and have led to the halving of domestic smoke emissions over the past 20 years. Progress has not been uniform throughout the country and the Department and the Clean Air Council are keeping this matter under constant review.
