HC Deb 04 November 1975 vol 899 c106W
Mr. Onslow

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what increase or decrease there has been in the number of administrative staff employed in the social services since 11th March 1974.

Mr. Meacher

The most recent comparison which is available for local authority social services departments in England shows that management, supervisory, administrative, clerical and secretarial staff increased from about 17,700 to about 21,300—in whole-time equivalents—between 30th September 1973 and 30th September 1974. The increase includes some staff transferred to local authorities when the National Health Service was reorganised. On 30th September 1974 there were in all about 166,000 staff employed in social services departments.
