HC Deb 04 November 1975 vol 899 cc134-5W
Mr. Fairbairn

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is the cost of purchasing and converting the Norman Shaw North Building for the use of Members of Parliament and their secretaries; and how many Members of Parliament and secretaries are accommodated there.

Mr. Freeson

The building was not purchased specifically for the use of Members of Parliament, but as a Government building. It includes a conference room, vote office, library, BBC and ITN television studios, DOE workshops and stores, photocopying rooms and plant rooms as well as accommodation for 128 members and 130 secretaries. The Receiver, Metropolitan Police, was paid £1.3 million for the building in 1967. The total estimated cost of conversion is approximately £3.25 million, of which building works constitute approximately £2.82 million, and supplies services £0.43 million.
