Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many convictions have taken place under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1975; and what were the penalties imposed at the latest date for which figures are available.

Mr. Harold Walker

I am informed by the Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission that reports of 21 convictions undertaken by the Health and Safety Executive for contraventions of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act have so far been received and the average penalty was £114.

Mr. Rose

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the number of convictions for breaches of the Factories Act in each of the past five years and 1975; and what were the average penalties imposed.

The Chairman of the Health and Safety Commission informs me that the number of convictions for breaches of the Factories Act in each of the past five years, and the average penalty imposed was as follows:
