HC Deb 03 November 1975 vol 899 cc35-6W
Mr. Hooley

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will publish in the Official Report details of the United Kingdom contribution to UNRWA in 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1975, and the proposed contribution for 1976 (figures expressed in sterling).

Mr. Ennals

Contributions have been made by Her Majesty's Government to UNRWA as follows:

£
1972 1,875,000
1973 2,000,000
1974 2,000,000
1975 2,250,000

In view of the serious financial difficulties facing UNRWA and in response to appeals from the Secretary General of the United Nations and the Commissioner- General of UNRWA, Her Majesty's Government announced on 20th October that an additional contribution of £200,000 would be made in 1975 and that, subject to parliamentary approval, they would be prepared to increase this sum within a maximum of £1 million to 10 per cent., of the total of any additional contributions made by countries other than the United Kingdom and the United States since the Commissioner-General's appeal of 24th June.

The level of our contribution for 1976 is still under consideration.

The United Kingdom also participates in the contributions made to UNRWA by the EEC.
