I am not clear what the noble Lord means by National Indebtedness. The tables below give figures on two possible definitions. The first gives interest paid on total public sector debt, and the second interest paid on the National Debt, that is the liabilities of the National Loans Fund. Figures in brackets show the increase in pence in the standard or basic rate of income tax which would have produced a yield, at the income levels of each specified year, equivalent to the total debt interest or service charge.
