HC Deb 22 May 1975 vol 892 c598W
Mr. Geraint Howells

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many cattle have been slaughtered under the brucellosis scheme this year in Great Britain; and what were the corresponding figures for 1972, 1973 and 1974.

Mr. Strang

The numbers of brucellosis reactors and dangerous contacts slaughtered in Great Britain was as follows:

1st January-31st March 1972 6,346
1st January-31st March 1973 15,761
1st January-31st March 1974 13,786
1st January-31st March 1975 17,707

The higher level of slaughtering after 1972 reflects the commencement as from 1st November of that year of compulsory measures to eradicate brucellosis and the progressive declaration of eradication areas.
