HC Deb 21 May 1975 vol 892 cc434-5W
Mr. Biffen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he has received concerning the EEC labelling requirements for grade 2 round-head cabbage; what advantages derive to the consumer and producer, respectively, from these requirements: and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peart

It has been suggested by the National Farmers' Union and others that growers should continue to sell on a per package basis rather than by number or weight. The requirement to give information on number or weight is, however, part of an international standard, approved also by non-EEC countries, which is intended to help the producer to get a better price than he would for variable packages and to improve marketing to the benefit of the consumer as well. We have assured the National Farmers' Union of our readiness to discuss any serious problems which may arise in practice.
