HC Deb 13 May 1975 vol 892 c96W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Industry how many people were employed by the Post Office in each year since 1960.

Mr. Gregor Mackenzie

The Post Office tells me that the number of people employed on 1st April each year since 1960 is as follows:

1960 338,840
1961 350,377
1962 365,874
1963 371,634
1964 376,601
1965 384,208
1966 397,207
1967 406,803
1968 412,531
1969 417,022
1970 407,669
1971 414,844
1972 416,370
1973 421,313
1974 420,914

The increase in staff reflects the growth of and increases in the Post Office businesses including the rapid growth of the telecommunications network during the period 1960–68 and the number of postal staff needed to take account of the wider dispersal of the population.
