HC Deb 05 May 1975 vol 891 c364W
Mr. Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Trade what estimate he has made of the effect of EEC Draft Instrument SI/508/75 of 26th March on the British textile industry.

Mr. Deakins

There should be no effect on the British textile industry. Woven jute fabrics are the only one of the textile items subject to the indicative ceiling régime, and imports into the Community during 1973 and 1974 did not reach levels where duties could be reimposed. Imports into the United Kingdom declined substantially. The other textile items concerned are subject only to simple statistical surveillance and the question of reimposing duties does not arise. Imports of these items from the countries specified in the draft instrument are not significant and no change in the pattern is expected.
