HC Deb 05 May 1975 vol 891 c371W
41. Mr. David Steel

asked the Secretary of State for Industry if he will take steps to encourage industry to specify recycled material when ordering paper from manufacturers.

Mr. Meacher

The first report of the Advisory Group on Waste Paper Recycling, which is expected shortly, will include a recommendation that the Government should set an example through their own paper purchasing policy.

Sir David Renton

asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether he will now report further developments following his meeting with representatives of the paper makers, the merchants and the local authorities on 13th February with regard to making the maximum use of waste paper collected in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Meacher

The Advisory Group on Waste Paper Recycling has now completed its initial examination of ways to increase the usage of waste paper in the United Kingdom and hopes to make its recommendations within the next two months. These will include a scheme for stabilising the market in times of low demand and a programme of research and development work.
