HL Deb 01 May 1975 vol 360 cc88-9WA
Viscount BROOKEBOROUGH

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will investigate the possibility of awarding some compensation to those who live in the neighbourhood of the Maze Prison, in view both of the hardship caused by the fall in property values and the inconvenience of the high security which surrounds the prison.

Lord DONALDSON of KINGSBRIDGE

The question of compensating residents in the Maze area has already been examined. In Northern Ireland, as in Great Britain, there is no statutory right to compensation for inconvenience or loss of property values alleged to be due to the proximity of a prison. Nor is it accepted that residents in the Maze area suffer any greater hardship than many people living in areas affected in other ways by the security situation.
