Mr. David Howell

asked the Minister for the Civil Service (1) what is the total number of non-industrial civil servants at the most recent count; and by how many this exceeds the total number on 1st April 1974;

(2) what is the total number of industrial civil servants; and how this compares with the total at 1st April 1974.

a: It is not customary to distinguish between non-industrial and industrial civil servants when describing the size of the Civil Service. Nevertheless, of the 692,036 staff in post on 1st April 1974 and the 693,921 in post on 1st January 1975 the distribution was as follows:
