HL Deb 24 March 1975 vol 358 cc1089-90WA
Lord CHELWOOD

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the total pension income today, including State benefits, of a squadron leader's widow and of the widow of a civil servant of similar status, neither of them with children, whose husbands had nine years' service and were both killed in flying accidents on duty (a) in July 1962; (b) in July 1972; and (c) in July 1974.

Lord WINTERBOTTOM

The figures in the table below assume that the squadron leader was paid at the bottom point of the scale for his rank at the time of his death; that the civil servant's pay at the time of death was equal to that of the squadron leader; and that in every case the widow is less than 40 years old at the present time. On this basis the total annual pension income, including State benefits, of a childless widow would today be as follows:

Killed in Squadron Leader's widow £ Civil Servant's widow £
July 1962 240 681
July 1972 240 2,059
July 1974 2,140 1,926

House adjourned at twenty-four minutes before nine o'clock.
