§ Mr. Banksasked the Secretary of State for Prices and Consumer Protection what foods, which are listed in the retail price index, can be bought for lower prices within the EEC than in this country.
§ Mrs. Shirley Williams:The comparison of retail prices is not straightforward. But on the information available the following main foods could be bought cheaper in one or more of the other member States than in the United Kingdom: beef, sugar, some fish, apples, oranges, bananas, tomatoes, cabbages, cauliflowers, onions.
The list excludes certain foodstuffs, notably cereals, which could be expected to cost somewhat more to import at present, if we were not members of the Community.
