HC Deb 20 March 1975 vol 888 cc531-2W
Mr. Burden

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if the dogs which smoke tobacco for five hours a day are forced to inhale the smoke for the whole period without a break.

Dr. Summerskill

No.

Mr. Burden

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether each dog used in the experiment is kept isolated from others when not smoking; and what is the size of the kennel or cage in which they are confined.

Dr. Summerskill

The dogs are kept in individual pens separated by a wire grid. The pens have a floor space of 48 sq ft.

Mr. Burden

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the 12 dogs not smoking are penned individually; what is the size of the pens in which they are confined; how and when they are exercised; and why it is necessary to slaughter and carry out a post mortem on them at the end of the experiment.

Dr. Summerskill

Each of the control group is penned individually in an area of 48 sq. ft. This is considered large enough to allow the dog to exercise within it. The control group will be examined in the same way as the other groups in order to provide a basis for comparison of the effect of smoking the various materials.
