§ 71. Mr. Charles Irvingasked the Secretary of State for Industry what are the current annual import bills for newsprint and wood pulp for paper making; and if he can make an estimate of the financial savings which could be achieved by using recycled waste paper instead to the maximum extent possible.
§ Mr. Meacher:Imports of newsprint in 1974 were valued at £172 million and of wood-pulp for paper-making purposes at £266 million. An assessment of the savings in the import bill which might accrue from a greater use of recycled fibre is currently being prepared for the Advisory Group on Waste Paper Recycling.
