The cost of car conversion grants in 1971–72, the last year that they were payable, was £90,063; the cost of the private car allowances in 1972–73, the year of their introduction, was £930,408. In 1972–73 about 1,000 three-wheeler users gave up their vehicles in favour of the private car allowance.
