asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how much has been spent on advertising in the Province by (a) the Northern Ireland Office and (b) the Northern Ireland Government Departments in 1972–73, 1973–74 and 1974–75 financial years; and what is the total cost of advertising which has been approved by his Department.

Expenditure on advertising in Northern Ireland by:

  1. (a)the Northern Ireland office was nil in the financial year 1972 –73; £104,203 in 1973–74 and £214,565 to date in 1974–75; approval has additionally been given to the Police Authority for expenditure, largely on recrutiment, of £163,500 from 1st January 1974–31st March 1975; and
  2. (b)Northern Ireland Government Departments was £301,838 in 1972–73; £395,864 in 1973–74; and £286,823 to date in 1974–75.

In addition to (b), the cost of advertising by the Northern Ireland Department of Commerce outside the Province on industrial promotion was £130,800 in 1972–73; £253,885 in 1973–74; and £168,655 to the end of January 1974–75.
