HC Deb 17 March 1975 vol 888 cc335-6W
Mr. Russell Johnston

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what steps he has taken to protect the homes and property of British residents in Turkish-occupied Cyprus; and whether he will take further action in the light of the recent looting of of British property in Kyrenia.

Mr. Hattersley:

I share the hon. Members' concern. Such protection is the responsibility of the local authorities, who have repeatedly been reminded of their obligations. On 3rd and 12th March the High Commissioner again complained to Mr. Denktash of the continued looting and harassment of the British community and made it clear to him that a major and rapid improvement in local conditions is necessary. Repeated representations have also been made to the Turkish Government and the situation is kept continually under review.
