HL Deb 12 March 1975 vol 358 cc394-5WA
Lord STANLEY of ALDERLEY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

If beef were to be sold into intervention,

  1. (a) where the intervention stores would be situated;
  2. (b) what would be the terms of payment; and
  3. (c) when the details of the type of beast for acceptance will be published.

Lord BESWICK

As far as possible such beef would be stored in commercial cold stores selected by the sellers from a list of 80 approved intervention centres. Payments are based on the beef weighed into store. Prices are derived from the United Kingdom intervention price of £22.85 per live cwt. and are subject to a deduction equivalent to the beef premium headage payment and the variable supplement payable on the date of slaughter.

The qualifying standards are identical to those published by the Intervention Board for Agricultural Produce in December 1974 except that animals in the "young lightweight" category which was provided for in Northern Ireland will no longer be accepted. Full details of the arrangements will be published by the Board next week and I shall see that the noble Lord receives a copy.
