HL Deb 11 March 1975 vol 358 c276WA
The Earl of HARROWBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will ensure that in future, until such time as the United Kingdom is forced to go metric, all distances in traffic data (including Highway Code) are quoted in yards rather than in feet, since neither colloquially nor in print does anyone use feet for distances (as opposed to heights) of over ten feet or so.

Baroness BIRK

My right honourable friend the Secretary of State for the Environment will bear this suggestion in mind, particularly in relation to the draft revisedHighway Code.
