Mr. Arthur Lewisasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether, in view of the practice of the police and the news media of announcing that persons who have not stood trial have murdered or killed persons and are wanted for questioning, he will propose making it a specific offence for these persons to be proclaimed as having committed murder unless they are found guilty by the courts.
§ Mr. Roy JenkinsNo. The law of contempt of court is already available to punish statements which may prejudice a fair trial, and I am not aware of any such practice as my hon. Friend describes.
