Mr. Richard Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what were the amounts paid to the national insurance fund by employees, employers, the Exchequer, and other sources in each year since 1948, respectively, and the proportions of the total annual receipts these amounts represented each year.

The details of contribution receipts from 1953–54 to 1973–74 are given in the following table. A similar breakdown of the contribution receipts before 1953–54 is not available.

Notes:
(1) The flat-rate contributions paid before 1969–70 include small amounts subsequently refunded as paid in error. Information as to the make up of the refunds is not available.
(2) In addition to the amounts shown in the table, the National Insurance Fund and the National Insurance Reserve Fund earned interest of about £50 million a year on the balances. This has been excluded in calculating the proportion of the payments represented by the various contributions.
