HC Deb 04 March 1975 vol 887 cc401-2W
Rev. Ian Paisley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what amount of money is still outstanding as the result of the Social Democratic and Labour Party originated rents and rates strike.

Mr. Concannon

Approximately £760,000 is owed by people still withholding rent in support of the civil disobedience campaign. A further £1.5 million is owed as arrears of rent by people no longer supporting the strike. It is estimated that about £750,000 is owed for rates, as a result of the campaign. Debts in respect of rent and rates continues to be a serious problem; but over the past year there has been a considerable reduction in that part of the debt which is due to the civil disobedience campaign.
