Mr. Wigley

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will publish a table in the Official Report showing identifiable public expenditure per capita in the United Kingdom at outturn prices analysed into each of the major sectors for each year since 1965–66.

Mr. Joel Barnett

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave to the hon. Member for Pembroke (Mr. Edwards) on 30th April—[Vol. 891, c.169–70.]. The figures given in that reply for the United Kingdom are broadly comparable to those of identifiable public expenditure per head in Wales given to the hon. Member by my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for

to public expenditure for 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974, using the definition of public expenditure as the total of national and local government capital and current account spending.

Mr. Joel Barnett

The figures below, which are based on the latest available information, relate to central and local government current and capital expenditure on goods and services, expressed as a percentage of gross national product at market prices. They are based on the United Nations system of national accounts which differs in some respects from the usual United Kingdom presentation. Comparable figures are not available for other elements of public expenditure.

Wales. Estimates for 1965–66 to 1967–68, and in programme detail for the later years, are not readily available for the United Kingdom and could not be obtained without incurring disproportionate costs.
