HC Deb 30 June 1975 vol 894 c340W
Mr. Jessel

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what guidance has been given by his Department as to the propriety of senior officers of the Metropolitan Police making public statements about how their duties as law enforcement officers are affected by political and public events and trends; and if he will make a statement following the removal of the Commander of T Division, Metropolitan Police.

Dr. Summerskill

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply I gave to a Question by my hon. Friend the Member for Keighley (Mr. Cryer) on 26th June. —[Vol. 894, c.229.] The deployment of officers is a matter for the Commissioner.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on how many occasions in the last year dogs have apprehended an escaping prisoner.

Dr. Summerskill

In the last year dogs and their handlers were directly involved in preventing the escape of six prisoners in four incidents.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total cost of training a prison dog handler and the dog, respectively.

Dr. Summerskill

Dogs are trained with their handlers and separate costs are not recorded. In 1974–75 the average cost of training for the handler and his dog was about £200.
