HC Deb 30 June 1975 vol 894 c338W
Mr. Ian Gilmour

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information he has about the purchase of foreign cars by police forces in England and Wales; and what advice he has given on this subject.

Dr. Summerskill

Foreign-made cars amount to 1½ per cent. of the total of police cars in service. Decisions as to whether they should be bought are for individual police authorities. Police authorities and chief officers of police have, however, been told that we assume that they will wish to survey the market carefully before buying a foreign car, and satisfy themselves that no suitable British-made car of comparable specification and price is available.
