asked the Secretary of State for Energy what proposals he has to ensure that the greatest amount of lubricating oil is further refined for use; and what savings in imports could be effected by such further refining.

The recovery of used lubricating oil, where practicable, is encouraged in the interests of both the national economy and the protection of the environment. A number of collection schemes are in operation and re-refining facilities are being expanded. The scope for additional saving is estimated to be less than a quarter of a per cent. of national oil imports.
