§ Mr. MacGregorasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what the starting level for the higher rates of income tax would now be if it were at the same equivalent level, taking into account rises in prices, as was established for the surtax rate at £5,000 in 1961–62; and if he will give this level for a single man and for a married man with two children under 11 years of age.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonWith income all earned, the surtax threshold for a single man in 1961–62 was £5,000 and that for a married man with two children under 11 was £5,338. Allowing for the increase in the retail price index from January 1962 to April 1975, the present-day equivalents would be £12,390 and £13,228, respectively.
