asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what projections of prison population size are currently being used in the formulation of prison building plans.

As indicated in the White Paper on Public Expenditure to 1978–79 (Cmnd. 5879, page 86, paragraph 9], it is currently assumed that the total number of persons held in prisons in England, Wales and Scotland will rise to 45,800 by 1978–79. Of these, some 40,000 are expected to be in prisons in England and Wales.
