Mr. Mike Thomas

asked the Lord President of the Council what increase in the salary of Members of Parliament is represented by the maximum allowable increases under (a) stages I, II and III of the Conservative Government's anti-inflation policy and (b) the social contract between 1st January 1972 and the present date.

Mr. Edward Short

(a) Stage I: Nil.

II: Increase £232.

III: Increase £338.24*.

(b) The Social Contract did not come into operation until September 1974. An increase based on the increase in the RPI over the previous 12 months would have been within the TUC cost of living guideline.

*No account is taken of threshold payments which could be negotiated, subject to certain conditions, under Stage III.
