Mr. Gwilym Roberts

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what figures are available of the number of deaths and serious accidents which were contributed to by the weakness of car and coach roofs; if he will consult with the motor vehicle manufacturers on methods of strengthening car and coach roofs; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Mills

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, in view of recent motor coach accidents, what advice he will give to the coach manufacturers to strengthen the sides and roofs of these coaches.

Recorded instances of bus or coach roofs collapsing are few, and no figures are available about the deaths or injuries they may have caused; none the less I intend to prescribe minimum strength requirements as soon as a suitable technical standard is available. Roll-over accidents are more frequent with cars, but roof collapse is seldom the primary cause of injury. I am, however, examining whether statutory requirements should be introduced.
