asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how the detection rate of crime has varied in England and Wales in the past 10 years; and, in particular, if it is possible to break this down into categories of offence.

The following table gives the information available for the last three years. No comparable figures are available for years before 1972 because of changes in legislation affecting offence groups, and changes in recording practice.
