HC Deb 23 June 1975 vol 894 c12W
Mr. Greville Janner

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) whether, in view of the recent bus accident causing fatalities and due to a burst tyre, he will cause investigations as to whether burst-proof tyres cannot now be supplied for all public transport;

(2) in view of recent fatalities caused by burst tyres, if he will take steps to encourage local authorities to use burst-proof tyres for all public transport.

Mr. Carmichael

My Department follows closely any developments in the production of tyres that would improve safety on the roads, but there are formidable technical problems in designing and manufacturing burst-proof tyres for vehicles as heavy as most of those used for public transport, and I am not aware that any tyres of this kind are yet in production.
