HL Deb 23 June 1975 vol 361 cc1267-8WA
Lord BROCKWAY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What decisions have been reached regarding the future constitution of Anguilla.

The PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY of STATE, FOREIGN and COMMONWEALTH OFFICE (Lord Goronwy-Roberts)

During the recent review of Anguilla's future status, Her Majesty's Government proposed that, although the Associated State of St. Christopher, Nevis and Anguilla would formally remain in being, a new and separate Constitution should be provided for the island which would give a larger measure of autonomy in domestic affairs. The Anguillans have accepted this proposal and, when agreement on the details has been reached, the Constitution will be provided by means of an Order in Council made under the Anguilla Act 1971. It is envisaged that this arrangement for the separate administration of the island will prevail for as long as it is the wish of the Anguillan people.

House adjourned at one minute before six o'clock.
