§ Mr. Biffenasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will set up a departmental inquiry to consider and report upon the cost to the general public of tax compliance, bearing in mind the evidence provided by the Institute of Fiscal Studies 490W and the hardship for retailers of administering a multi-rate value added tax.
§ Mr. Robert SheldonNo. The Government recognise the burden of tax compliance upon both the business community and, indirectly, the general public. Every effort is made to minimise this, consistent with efficient and equitable administration of fiscal policies.
