§ Mr. Hooleyasked the Minister of Overseas Development (1) what aid is currently given to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands; and how the programme is likely to be affected by the forthcoming inddependence of these islands;
(2) whether the United Kingdom will continue grant-in-aid to the Gilbert and Ellice Islands after independence; and if any terminal date will be set for such financial assistance.
§ Mrs. Hart£2.14 million was disbursed in 1974. I expect our aid in the current financial year to total about £2.3 million, rather over half being development aid and the balance technical assistance. The territory does not receive grant-in-aid. In addition, I am considering the requirements for aid of the Ellice Islands after separation from the Gilberts.
132WThere is no timetable for independence. Aid after independence would be determined nearer the time in the light of the islands' needs, taking into account the possibilities of aid from other donors, including the European Development Fund.
