Mr. Sproat

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many civil servants are employed in his Department; what is the total cost of running the Department for the latest year for which figures are available; and if he will itemise the main constituent costs.

70,649 industrial and non-industrial civil servants were employed in the Department of the Environment at 1st April 1975.

The estimates of staff salaries etc. for 1975–76 published in the Supply Estimates 1975–76 total £221,985,000 net of Appropriations in Aid made up as follows:

Consultants fees 26,121,000
Travelling and subsistence 9,397,000
Other general expenses 15,624,000
