asked the Secretary of State for Energy (1) what is his current estimate with regard to the United Kingdom's provision of power supplies by sources during the next 50 years;

(2) what is his policy for the provision of electricity supplies by source over the next 50 years.

The Department has not prepared detailed forecasts of primary energy consumption beyond 1990. Forecasts up to 1990 were given in evidence to the Select Committee on Science and Technology, Energy Resources Sub-Committee, and were published in the minutes of evidence (155-VIII) Annex C. Forecasts beyond 1990 are bound to be highly speculative.
