HC Deb 17 July 1975 vol 895 c610W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what advice he has given local authorities in Wales about meeting the housing requirements of one-parent families; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Morris

In Welsh Office Circular 42/75, "Housing: Needs and Action", I have advised local authorities to recognise the need for small households, including one-parent families, for a greater proportion of smaller, one-or two-bedroom houses, maisonettes or flats. The circular also advises on methods which local authorities might adopt to meet the need, such as the use of starter homes, the design of three-person house types and conversion of existing dwellings. I have also recently announced in WO Circular 109/75 a special yardstick allowance of £275 on a variation of price contract, or £290 on a fixed price contract, for any dwelling designed for one, two or three persons.
