HC Deb 30 January 1975 vol 885 c260W
Mr. Spearing

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will tabulate in the Official Report the approximate amounts of investment in productive industry in the United Kingdom for each of the years 1970 to 1974, indicating broadly the sources of such capital investment.

Mr. Robert Sheldon

Information on investment in fixed assets by the industries covered by the index of industrial production—the total of mining and quarrying, gas, electricity and water, construction, and manufacturing—is given in the table below.

Gross Domestic Fixed Capital Formation
£ million at current prices
1970 3,207
1971 3,299
1972 3,232
1973 3,887
1974 (first three quarters only) 3,666

The sources of funds through undistributed income (saving), capital grants, capital issues, and borrowing cannot be related to specific uses, which include investment in fixed assets and in stocks, increases in other current assets and trade investments. Figures of the sources and uses of funds for public corporations and for all industrial and commercial companies are regularly published in "Financial Statistics", Tables 34 and 82 of the December 1974 issue. Separate estimates for those enterprises whose output is covered by the index of industrial production are not available.
