§ Mr. Spearingasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he will publish in the Official Report a table showing the approximate proportions of the major categories of food for human consumption in the United Kingdom derived from the United Kingdom, the original six members of the EEC, Denmark and Eire, Commonwealth countries, and the rest of the world respectively for each of the years 1972 and 1974.
§ Mr. StrangThe United Kingdom produced nearly 55 per cent. of its supplies of food for human consumption in 1972–73, the latest period for which this analysis is available. Import statistics for agricultural commodities do not show whether imports were intended for human consumption or not. It is not, therefore, possible to tell what proportion of imports from a particular country are intended for human consumption as against use for animal feed or for various industrial purposes.
